Where to Find Mountain Goat in Unit G03

What CPW publishes for unit G03 is a boundary, not a mountain goat map. Every place named below sits inside the unit line. Which of them holds animals in your season is for you to find out. The unit lies in Lake, Chaffee, Pitkin and Gunnison counties.

The lines of the unit: Colo. 82, U.S. 24 and Chaffee CR 306

CPW has unit G03 bounded on the north by Colo. 82; on the east by U.S. 24; on the south by Chaffee CR 306 and Cottonwood Pass Rd. (USFS 209); on the west by USFS 742, 761 (Taylor Pass Rd.) and 7761, and Pitkin CRs 15E (Richmond Hill Rd.) and 14 (Aspen Mtn. Summer Rd.). It tells you the shape of the unit and nothing about its inhabitants. Those features are what you will check against the map all week, and the divides among them are the ones that matter.

High ground inside the line: Mount Harvard, La Plata Peak and Collegiate Peaks

Named high points inside the unit include Mount Harvard at 14,377 feet, La Plata Peak at 14,316 feet, Collegiate Peaks at 14,283 feet, Mount Yale at 14,174 feet and Mount Belford at 14,170 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Goats live above the trees on cliff and talus and come down only when weather makes them.

Holding ground: La Plata Basin, Browns Pass and Silver Basin

Below them sit La Plata Basin at 11,993 feet, Browns Pass at 11,981 feet, Silver Basin at 11,690 feet, Horn Fork Basin at 11,417 feet and Wet Gulch at 11,014 feet. Those are the basins, parks and bottoms this unit has, and they are what you glass into from above. Pick the one with the least road on its upwind side.

Public ground to start from: Clear Creek Reservoir SWA and Heckendorf SWA

CPW lists Clear Creek Reservoir SWA and Heckendorf SWA inside this unit as ground open to public hunting. Each property sets its own restrictions, and the agency's page for it is where they are written down. Federal land covers about 45% of the unit on top of those.

The herd this unit belongs to: MG-01

CPW does not manage mountain goat unit by unit. It manages them as data analysis unit MG-01, and unit G03 is one piece of it. The rest of MG-01 is unit G1, unit G2 and unit G14. Read a neighbour in the same herd before you read the state average — the herd, not the unit line, is what the agency is steering.

CPW's 2026 draw recap for mountain goat in unit G03, by hunt code, with resident and nonresident kept apart because the two draw from different licence pools:

  • GEG03O1R — Rifle, 1st Season, Either Sex, resident: 1,591 applicants for 18 licences, 1.1% drawn, 3 preference points needed
  • GEG03O2R — Rifle, 2nd Season, Either Sex, resident: 1,069 applicants for 18 licences, 1.7% drawn, 3 preference points needed
  • GEG03O1R — Rifle, 1st Season, Either Sex, nonresident: 725 applicants for 2 licences, 0.3% drawn, 3 preference points needed
  • GEG03O2R — Rifle, 2nd Season, Either Sex, nonresident: 613 applicants for 2 licences, 0.3% drawn, 3 preference points needed

Colorado runs a pure preference-point draw, so the point figure above is the requirement the agency published for that code in that year, not a forecast for the next one. Figures checked against CPW's own statistics pages on 2026-06-09.
