Unit 7/9 (Kendrick, Schultz Pass and the Tusayan migration)
Arizona Hunting Guide — Mule Deer
The combined 7/9 mule deer hunt exists because of a migration. GPS collar data shows a large proportion of unit 7's deer move south to north between the units — wintering in unit 9 and returning to unit 7 in spring — so AZGFD combined the two for all deer hunts. Unit 7 is the ponderosa and aspen country north and west of Flagstaff around Kendrick Mountain, Schultz Pass, the White Horse Hills and the Hochderffer Hills; unit 9 is the Kaibab and Tusayan country to its north. One rule shapes everything: under the Forest Service Travel Management Rule, motorized retrieval of deer is not allowed on either the Coconino or the Kaibab National Forest.
