Arizona Pronghorn

Unit 6BS (6B south, the Verde Valley flats)

Arizona Hunting Guide — Pronghorn

6B South is the general pronghorn hunt in the desert grassland and savanna of the Verde Valley, north and northeast of Clarkdale. The named country is Wheatfield, Duff Flat and Windmill Flat, reached on Forest Road 525, the Red Canyon Road, and Forest Road 131, the Sycamore Canyon Road. This is the second of GMU 6B's two small pronghorn subpopulations, and like the northern herd it can be hard to find — these animals are often in juniper-pinyon savanna rather than open grass. Hunting is not permitted within a quarter mile of any occupied building, wildlife viewing platform, picnic area or developed trailhead.

Where the pronghorn are in 6B South: Wheatfield, Duff Flat and Windmill Flat

GMU 6B holds limited pronghorn numbers in two subpopulations. This southern group inhabits desert grassland and savanna habitat in the Verde Valley — a different world from the forest meadows of 6B North.

The three named flats

Wheatfield, Duff Flat and Windmill Flat. Those are the areas the agency names and they sit north and northeast of Clarkdale.

Getting in

Forest Road 525, the Red Canyon Road, and Forest Road 131, the Sycamore Canyon Road, both running north and northeast out of the Clarkdale area.

The difficulty

These pronghorn can also be difficult to locate when they're occupying juniper-pinyon savanna habitat. Savanna is open enough to walk through and closed enough to hide an animal standing still — which means glassing has to be slow and deliberate rather than a sweep across a plain.

The quarter-mile rule, spelled out

Hunting is not permitted within a quarter mile of any occupied building, wildlife viewing platform, picnic area or developed trailhead. The Verde Valley has all four, and the restriction is listed explicitly in this unit's guide for that reason.

What the country looks like

Desert grassland and juniper-pinyon savanna stepping up from the Verde River, with Sycamore Canyon cutting in from the north. Lower and warmer than the 6B North meadows, and a more conventional pronghorn landscape — just with more trees in it than pronghorn usually tolerate.

Scouting is the whole job

With limited numbers in a savanna where animals are hard to see, finding a herd before the season is most of the hunt. Spend the time; there isn't enough country or enough animals to find one by driving around in season.
