Bison Hunting in Unit 5A/5B

Where to Find Bison in Units 5A and 5B: Springs, Ridges and Roads

We'll be straight with you first. AZGFD's unit guides for 5A and 5B don't break either unit down. The overview and areas fields are blank. All they give is the Coconino National Forest travel rule and a list of other species present. Nothing in them says where bison live, so we won't pretend to. What follows is built from terrain, ownership, water and access.

The shape of the country

The combined unit runs 692 square miles. Elevation ranges from 5,095 to 7,158 feet, with a mean of 6,051. Sixty percent is national forest, 8 percent is state trust, and 32 percent is private or other. That last number matters. Nearly a third of the ground isn't open by default, so you'll need to know exactly where public land ends before you key on any animal.

Sawmill, Elk, Ashurst and Mint springs

Start your map work with water. The packet counts 372 tanks, 53 springs, 793 stream segments and 7 lakes. Four springs carry names: Sawmill Springs, Elk Spring, Ashurst Spring and Mint Spring. Mark all four. Big grazers tie themselves to water, so these are our first places to look for sign. Tanks will hold animals when the springs don't. We can't tell you which ones are productive, because the guide doesn't say. Scout them.

Ridges and mesas as glassing points

The packet lists plenty of high points flagged for glassing: Anderson Mesa (7,240 feet), Cinch Hook Butte (7,226), Blue Ridge (7,471), Dick Hart Ridge (7,814), Baker Butte (8,069) and Hutch Mountain (8,508), among others. One caution. Every one of them tops the unit's stated maximum of 7,158 feet, and Dane Ridge sits in Gila County. So the list clearly reaches past the boundary. Use these as landmarks and vantage points, but check each against the unit map before you count on it being inside 5A or 5B.

AZ 87, FR 300 and the roads that reach in

  • AZ 87: 30.4 miles, paved, any vehicle. This is your spine.
  • AZ 99 (3.3 miles) and I-40/US 180 (5.6 miles) are also paved.
  • FR 300: 16.1 miles, high-clearance.
  • FR 751: 6.1 miles, high-clearance.
  • FR 631: 4.6 miles, high-clearance.

Winslow, Pine, Strawberry and Beaver Valley Estates are your nearest towns. We can't give you an early-season versus late-season pattern for bison. The packet doesn't have one. Don't buy a pattern from anyone who can't show where it came from.

Unit 5A/5B terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up · figures are for GMU 5A

The lay of it

  • 5,095–7,158 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 6,051 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 692.4 sq mi inside the boundary.

Who owns the ground

  • National Forest — 60%
  • State Trust — 8%
  • Private / Other — 32%

Roughly 68% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 372 tanks
  • 53 springs
  • 793 stream segments
  • 7 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Hutch Mountain (8,508 ft), Baker Butte (8,069 ft), Pine Mountain (7,986 ft), Dane Ridge (7,902 ft)

Holding ground: Bargaman Park (7,403 ft), Limestone Pasture (7,360 ft), Diversion Park (7,341 ft), Sawmill Springs, Elk Spring

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
