Arizona Bighorn Sheep

Unit 44AE (Granite Wash, Harcuvar and Black Mountains)

Arizona Hunting Guide — Bighorn Sheep

44AE is the eastern bighorn hunt area of GMU 44A — a herd of about 117 sheep, up steadily over the past decade, spread across three ranges: the Granite Wash Mountains, the Harcuvars and the Black Mountains. Rams taken in recent years have scored about 160 to 163. These ranges offer every kind of desert bighorn habitat from low rolling hills to high craggy cliffs, and access varies sharply between them — the Granite Wash has the most, the Harcuvar the least. There are nine developed sheep waters across the 44A hunt areas, though sheep rarely water actively during the December hunts. Two BLM wilderness areas, Tres Alamos and Harcuvar, cover part of the ground.
