Where the Deer Live in 41: Palomas Plains, the Eagletails and the Farm Edges
Palomas Plains north of Dateland
Start here. AZGFD's own unit guide says most of the unit's deer are on the Palomas Plains, a very flat stretch bisected by large desert riparian washes. Density across the unit runs about one deer per square mile, so you're looking for the best country, not a big herd.
From the south, take the Dateland/Ave 64E Road north to the Palomas-Hyder Road. Go east about 4 miles and cross the railroad. Then you're on BLM YE025, the Palomas-Harquahala Road, which the guide calls the way to the heart of the plains. From I-10 in the north, the Hovatter Road or the Harquahala Valley Road both run straight south into the unit. The Agua Caliente-Sentinel Road through Hyder is the other southern approach.
Eagletail Mountains
This is the only range in the unit with significant deer numbers, according to AZGFD. Almost all of it sits inside the Eagletail Mountain Wilderness, so you'll leave most of the crowd behind. Mapped high points include Eagletail Peak at 3,163 feet, with Courthouse Rock at 2,535 feet nearby. Most of the unit is far lower, with a mean elevation around 957 feet.
Reach it from I-10 Exit 81 by taking the Harquahala Road south to Courthouse-Centennial Road. Turn west to the gas line road and keep going west. Several spurs run off that road to the wilderness edge. The guide pitches this as a pack-in hunt on foot or horseback.
Farm edges in dry years
When it's dry, the guide says deer gather in and around the ag ground of the Harquahala, Hyder and Wellton-Mohawk valleys. They feed and water in the fields at night, then go back to the adjacent desert by day. That puts your daytime hunting in the desert just north of the fields.
- Wellton-Mohawk: I-8 exits 30, 37, 42 and 54, heading north.
- Hyder: I-8 Exit 87, then the Agua Caliente-Sentinel Road north.
- Harquahala: I-10 Exit 81, then the Harquahala Valley Road south.
Gila River north of I-8
Deer are here, but the guide says they're hard to find. The cover is dense and the numbers are low. It also says some very large bucks live in it, and we'd treat that as the reason to put time in.
Land status and country to skip
The guide says most of the unit is BLM. The mapped ownership data shows only 15 percent BLM and 85 percent private or other. We can't reconcile those figures, so check land status before you commit to any piece of ground. Many farm parcels are posted private. Skip anything you can't confirm as public.
Unit 41 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 400–1,501 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 957 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 2,840.5 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- BLM — 15%
- Private / Other — 85%
Roughly 15% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 194 tanks
- 8 springs
- 184 stream segments
- 24 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
Named features inside the unit
Glass from: Eagletail Peak (3,163 ft), Saddle Mountain (2,947 ft), Anvil Mountain (2,758 ft), Courthouse Rock (2,535 ft)
Holding ground: Apache Box (1,221 ft), Copper Valley (1,159 ft), Nottbusch Valley (1,119 ft)
Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
