GMU 32 is the country west of the Klondyke–Bonita road, between the San Pedro River and the Sulphur Springs Valley — the Galiuro Mountains with their 76,000-acre wilderness, the Winchester Mountains, Redfield Canyon and the lower end of Aravaipa Canyon. Post-hunt surveys average about 400 mule deer with 8 to 10 bucks per 100 does, and whitetail run 275 to 300 with a notably high 18 to 20 bucks per 100 does, though whitetail numbers have trended down with drought. A Gould's turkey hunt covers the wilderness interiors and the Ash Creek–High Creek country off the Sunset Loop. Many access routes to public and State Trust land cross private ground, which is why the sign-in posts matter here.

Mule Deer Hunting in Unit 32

Where the mule deer are in 32: the Sunset Loop country, Ash Creek and the mesas

Mule deer are found through most of unit 32. The numbers give you a realistic picture: post-hunt surveys average about 400 mule deer with 8 to 10 bucks per 100 does, and hunt success runs around 20 percent.

The Sunset Loop — Ash Creek and High Creek

These are popular mule deer and whitetail areas and they carry high hunter densities. Within them, the agency names some better mule deer ground: the Mesas, the lower elevations along Ash Creek, and the country between High Creek and the surrounding drainages.

The trade the guide puts to you plainly

Areas with high deer numbers also have the highest number of hunters. To find fewer hunters, you may have to settle for lower deer numbers — or be willing to hike a long way. That's the choice on this unit, stated by the agency rather than discovered the hard way.

The ranges and the drainages

Bassett Peak tops the unit at 7,642 feet, with the Winchester Mountains and Reiley Peak at 7,622, Kennedy Peak and the Galiuro Mountains at 7,531, Muskhog Mountain at 7,407, Rockhouse Peak at 7,115 and Rhodes Peak at 7,110. Below them: the Topout Divide at 6,505 feet, North Fork Douglas Canyon at 5,720, Black Eagle Canyon at 5,322, Brush Canyon at 5,224, Douglas Canyon at 5,149 and Cedar Flat at 5,141.

The access reality

Because of the ownership pattern here, many routes to public and State Trust land cross private ground. The Sportsman/Landowner Access Program keeps a lot of it open, and the condition is that hunters obey the laws and signs and use the sign-in and sign-out posts. Get a Forest Service map of the Coronado's Safford Ranger District or a BLM map to identify land status.

Water

About 480 stock tanks and 220 springs across 1,530 square miles — a lot of water for southeastern Arizona, which means deer aren't tied to any one source. Read sign rather than assuming.

How to hunt 32 mule deer: scout, glass, and decide how far you'll walk

Hunt success for mule deer here averages around 20 percent. The agency says preseason scouting and good optics will definitely improve your chances, and on a unit with 8 to 10 bucks per 100 does, finding a buck at all is most of the work.

Make the crowd decision early

Ash Creek and High Creek hold deer and hunters. Either accept the company, or trade deer density for solitude by hiking a long way off the Sunset Loop. The one thing that doesn't work is hunting the popular country at a casual distance from the road and expecting the deer the far country holds.

Glass the lower elevations and the mesas

The better mule deer ground here is low — the Mesas and the lower stretches of Ash Creek. Get on an edge with a view across a drainage before light and work it with a tripod. The canyon system off the Galiuros gives you plenty of opposite slopes to read.

Use the sign-in posts

They're the reason you can get to much of this unit. Sign in and out, obey posted signs, keep to existing roads. Access across private ground here is cooperative, not guaranteed.

Get both maps

Forest Service map for the Safford Ranger District, BLM map for the rest. Between them you can answer the ownership question on the ground, which on this unit you will need to do more than once a day.

One last thought from the agency

The 32 guide ends its deer section with a reminder that a successful hunt is time outdoors with people you like and a chance to see wildlife, and shouldn't be measured only by a harvest. On a unit with a 20 percent success rate and a lot of walking, that's practical advice as much as sentiment.

Legal shooting hours

Big game may be taken only during daylight hours — from sunrise to sunset. Check the sunrise and sunset times for your unit, not for Phoenix.

Motorized retrieval

Arizona permits motorized big-game retrieval only where the unit's travel-management decision allows it, and in several units only for elk. Where it is allowed it means one vehicle, one trip, within one mile of a road shown open on the Motor Vehicle Use Map — never inside a quiet area, a wilderness or a closed area. Pull the MVUM for your ranger district and confirm before you shoot somewhere you cannot carry an animal out of.

Tagging

Sign your tag before you go afield and attach it to the animal immediately after the kill. Hunters aged 10–13 must carry their Hunter Education card with the licence and tag.

Leaving meat

Leaving edible meat in the field is illegal. Edible meat means the four quarters and the loins at a minimum.

Where you may not shoot

Occupied structures — No shooting within a quarter mile of an occupied farmhouse, cabin, lodge or building without the owner's permission. That rules out shooting toward most lakeside cabin tracts.
Campsites and developed areas — Forest Service rules prohibit discharging a firearm within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area.
Roads and water — No shooting from a vehicle, and no shooting on, across or into a road. No shooting across a body of water adjacent to a Forest road.

Mule Deer: where to put the shot

Broadside or quartering away, on the back edge of the front leg about a third of the way up the body.

Shots to refuse

Nothing behind or overlapping the animal you picked.
Your maximum range is the farthest you have shot a three-shot group into a paper plate from the rest you are carrying.
Pass the shot you are talking yourself into.

Unit 32 issues moderate mule deer tags (~450 across three recent years against ~682 applicants). Success rates vary considerably by weapon and season window. Coues deer are the more prominent big game species in 32; mule deer tags are a secondary opportunity for many hunters.

Unit 32 is drawable at low to moderate bonus-point balances for most mule deer hunt codes. Arizona's weighted bonus-point draw routes 20% of tags to max-point applicants first, then 80% via random weighted draw. A hunter-ed bonus point is available to applicants who complete AZGFD-recognized hunter education.

Turkey Hunting in Unit 32

Unit 32 covers the Rincon Mountains and portions of the Santa Catalina foothills east of Tucson within the Coronado National Forest and Saguaro National Park East boundary. Merriam's turkeys are present in the higher pine-oak and ponderosa zones of the Rincons above 5,500 feet. Turkey tags for Unit 32 are issued through AZGFD's weighted bonus-point draw. The unit provides accessible hunting from Tucson with quality Sky Island habitat.

Where the Gould's turkeys are in 32: Ash Creek, High Creek and the wilderness interiors

Gould's turkey distribution in unit 32 is limited to four areas, and only one of them is straightforwardly huntable. The agency lists them as the San Pedro River, Aravaipa Canyon, the interior of the Galiuro Mountain Wilderness, and the Ash Creek–High Creek country off the Sunset Loop.

Ash Creek and High Creek — where most birds are taken

Public access is open to Coronado National Forest land here along the Sunset Loop road, and fair numbers of birds use North and South Ash Creek, Oak Creek, Harrison and High Creek. Most hunters take their birds in this country. If you've drawn a general 32 turkey tag, start here.

The San Pedro River — difficult

A lot of the river corridor is private, and there's virtually no public access to the public pieces. The guide's assessment is that hunting turkeys along this corridor would be very difficult. Treat it as information rather than an option.

Aravaipa Canyon — mostly private at the east end

There are numerous turkeys at the east end of Aravaipa, but most of that ground is Nature Conservancy property until the mouth of Turkey Creek. You'd need permission for the private land, or you hunt around Turkey Creek and call birds off it.

The wilderness hunt

Hunters drawn for the Aravaipa–Galiuro Wilderness Area hunt are limited to three designated wildernesses: the Galiuro Wilderness and Redfield Canyon Wilderness in unit 32, and the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness in units 31 and 32. The Galiuro Wilderness covers over 76,000 acres of high timbered slopes, with remote access on trails near Deer Creek, High Creek and Ash Creek.

One closure to plan around

Vehicular access into Power Garden via Forest Road 96 from the Klondyke road is no longer available to the public. Entering from there requires landowner permission. Don't build a wilderness approach around an old map showing that route.

How to hunt Gould's in 32: work the Sunset Loop creeks, or pack into the Galiuros

Shotgun success on these hunts runs around 35 percent. There are two realistic plans here and they suit different hunters.

Plan one: the Sunset Loop creeks

Drive the Sunset Loop, walk into North or South Ash Creek, Oak Creek, Harrison or High Creek, and hunt the canyon bottoms with big trees in them. This is where most birds are killed and it's reachable in a day. Spend the first evening locating a roost — big oaks, sycamores or pines with droppings and feathers beneath them — then set up between that roost and the nearest water before first light.

Plan two: pack into the wilderness

If you drew the Aravaipa–Galiuro wilderness hunt, it's foot and horse only across 76,000-plus acres. Go in on the Deer Creek, High Creek or Ash Creek trails with a spike camp. Expect to be alone and expect to carry everything, including the bird.

Use their voice, then shut up

Gould's are vocal and less skittish than Merriam's. Locate with a call at dawn, then go quiet and let a committed tom walk in. Over-calling is the most common mistake on birds this confident.

Know the boundary you're hunting

This hunt is defined by wilderness lines and by private boundaries at Aravaipa, not by the unit outline. Load the wilderness boundaries and the Nature Conservancy line into your GPS, and carry the Safford Ranger District forest map.

Shot discipline and the weapon rule

Forty yards and under, head and neck, with a pattern you've put on paper. Check whether your season is shotgun-with-shot or archery-only before you pack. And never shoot at sound or movement — the Galiuros carry hikers and other hunters working the same gobble.

Know the limit of your pattern. Pattern the gun on paper at 40 yards with the load you are carrying.
Never shoot at movement or sound in cover. Spring woods are full of other hunters stalking the same gobble.
In spring, legal is a bearded bird. Look for the beard, not the gobble.

Unit 32 spring turkey success rates typically run 30–45%, reflecting the physical demands of accessing quality habitat and the unit's relatively small huntable acreage outside the National Park. Hunters willing to put in the miles to reach the upper pine-oak zones consistently find less-pressured, responsive birds.

Unit 32 turkey is a moderately competitive draw. Tag numbers are limited by the restricted huntable acreage on Coronado NF lands within the unit. Coues Whitetail Deer Hunting in Unit 32

Unit 32 covers the Sierrita Mountains and Cerro Colorado foothills of southern Pima County, drawing over 3,000 cumulative Coues whitetail applicants. The unit's rolling terrain west and southwest of Tucson provides classic desert grassland Coues hunting with good public access. Deer density is solid throughout the unit, and the flat-to-rolling terrain makes this one of the more physically accessible Coues draw units.

Where the Coues deer are in 32: the higher elevations, through the whole unit

Whitetail in 32 are found in the higher elevations throughout the unit. The survey numbers are worth knowing because the buck ratio is unusually good: 275 to 300 deer observed post-hunt, with 18 to 20 bucks per 100 does, and hunt success averaging around 24 percent. The trend, though, is down — the agency attributes a continuing decline to drought over recent years. There are still bucks here for the persistent hunter.

Start high in the Galiuros and Winchesters

Higher elevation is the filter. Bassett Peak at 7,642 feet, the Winchester Mountains and Reiley Peak at 7,622, Kennedy Peak and the Galiuros at 7,531, Muskhog Mountain at 7,407, Rockhouse Peak at 7,115 and Rhodes Peak at 7,110 mark the band to work. The Galiuro Wilderness alone covers more than 76,000 acres of high timbered slopes.

The Sunset Loop drainages

Ash Creek and High Creek are popular for both deer species. Within the Sunset Loop country, North and South Ash Creek, Oak Creek, Harrison and High Creek all hold game. Expect hunters, and expect the pressure to drop sharply a mile from the road.

Into the wilderness

Major remote access points into the Galiuro Wilderness interior are the trails near Deer Creek, High Creek and Ash Creek. Note one closure: vehicular access into Power Garden via Forest Road 96 from the Klondyke road is no longer open to the public, and entering from there needs landowner permission.

The canyons below

Topout Divide at 6,505 feet, North Fork Douglas Canyon at 5,720, Black Eagle Canyon at 5,322, Brush Canyon at 5,224, Douglas Canyon at 5,149 and South Fork Canyon at 5,141 are the named drainages. Glass into them from the ridges rather than walking up them.

When they move

During the October and November hunts, whitetail activity is generally restricted to early morning and late evening — so that's when you need to be in position. Midday activity becomes more common during the rut in late December and January.

How to hunt 32 Coues deer: be glassing before sun-up, with the binoculars on a tripod

Hunt success for whitetail in 32 averages around 24 percent, which is good for Coues deer. The agency's prescription is specific enough to follow literally.

Be in position before the sun

A successful hunter will be in position to begin glassing before sun-up, and still glassing in the last minutes before sundown. That's the sentence to build your day around. Activity in the October and November hunts is concentrated at those two windows; hunting the middle of the day is mostly repositioning.

The tripod argument

The guide makes a claim worth quoting the sense of: a quality pair of binoculars on a tripod deserves as much investment as a good rifle and scope. Whitetail blend into this country and are genuinely hard to spot, and a steady image is what reveals an ear or a tail at 600 yards. Persistence in glassing and scouting are, in the agency's words, the keys to success.

Rut hunts change the clock

By late December and January, midday movement becomes common. That makes an all-day sit over a saddle or a canyon junction worthwhile in a way it isn't in October — and it's the best chance at a mature buck in a declining herd.

Hike for the wilderness deer

The Galiuro Wilderness interior, reached on trails near Deer Creek, High Creek and Ash Creek, is where deer get old. It's a pack-in. In exchange you get 76,000 acres with no vehicles in it.

Access etiquette, because it is conditional

Many routes to public land here cross private ground, kept open through the Sportsman/Landowner Access Program. Use the sign-in and sign-out posts, obey every sign, and keep to existing roads. Carry the Safford Ranger District forest map and a BLM map so you always know whose ground you're on.

Legal shooting hours

Big game may be taken only during daylight hours — from sunrise to sunset. Check the sunrise and sunset times for your unit, not for Phoenix.

Tagging

Sign your tag before you go afield and attach it to the animal immediately after the kill. Hunters aged 10–13 must carry their Hunter Education card with the licence and tag.

Leaving meat

Leaving edible meat in the field is illegal. Edible meat means the four quarters and the loins at a minimum.

Where you may not shoot

Occupied structures — No shooting within a quarter mile of an occupied farmhouse, cabin, lodge or building without the owner's permission. That rules out shooting toward most lakeside cabin tracts.
Campsites and developed areas — Forest Service rules prohibit discharging a firearm within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area.
Roads and water — No shooting from a vehicle, and no shooting on, across or into a road. No shooting across a body of water adjacent to a Forest road.

Broadside or quartering away, on the back edge of the front leg about a third of the way up the body.

Shots to refuse

Nothing behind or overlapping the animal you picked.
Your maximum range is the farthest you have shot a three-shot group into a paper plate from the rest you are carrying.
Pass the shot you are talking yourself into.

Is Unit 32 better for mule deer or Coues?

Coues deer are more prominent in Unit 32 — the higher oak and pine-oak belts hold strong Coues populations. Mule deer are best pursued on the oak-grassland transitions and foothills.

Is Swift Trail open during mule deer season?

Lower elevations typically yes; upper elevations close for snow starting in November most years. Check Coronado NF's current road status before planning higher-elevation hunts.

What's the best base town for Unit 32?

Safford has full services and is 20–30 minutes from most access points. Willcox works for the south/west side of the unit.

Can I hunt turkeys inside Saguaro National Park East?

No. Hunting is prohibited within Saguaro National Park. Unit 32 hunting is restricted to Coronado National Forest and BLM lands within the GMU boundary. Know the park boundary precisely before pursuing birds — AZGFD GMU maps and NPS boundary maps are essential planning tools.

How far is it to reach turkey habitat in Unit 32?

The best pine-oak turkey habitat in the Rincon Mountains is 3–6 miles from most trailheads on foot. This makes Unit 32 a physically demanding hunt that rewards hunters willing to go beyond the initial access area.

Are there turkeys in the lower desert portions of Unit 32?

No. Merriam's turkeys in the Rincon Mountains stay above the saguaro-desertscrub zone, typically above 5,500 feet. The lower unit below this elevation does not hold turkeys. Focus all scouting and hunting on the pine-oak and ponderosa zones of the upper mountain.

Is there active mining activity in Unit 32 that affects hunting?

The Sierrita copper mine (Freeport-McMoRan) operates in the unit. Check current private land and mining claim boundaries before hunting — stay on BLM and state land. The mine activity does not close the unit to hunting, but land navigation requires careful map study.
