Unit 30B (Dragoon and Mule Mountains)

Arizona Hunting Guide — Mule Deer, Coues Whitetail Deer

GMU 30B is the Dragoon and Mule Mountains and the high desert between them, in Cochise County around Tombstone and Bisbee, with the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area along its western edge. Mule deer are the stronger hunt — they use the low desert flats around both ranges and the agricultural edges, where densities are highest — while whitetail hold a relatively small population confined to the two ranges and the river. The agency's repeated warning on this unit is about identification: both deer share the same habitat types here and more wrong-species violations have occurred in 30B than in neighbouring units.

Mule Deer Hunting in Unit 30B

Where the mule deer are in 30B: the desert flats, the ag edges and the rolling hills

30B is a big unit built around two ranges — the Dragoons and the Mules — with low hills and ridges between them and high desert flats spread through the valley. Mule deer use the low country.

The flats, and the farm edges

The best mule deer habitat is the lower elevation desert flats around both the Dragoon and Mule Mountains. Agricultural fields next to that habitat produce higher deer densities, which makes the farm edges the single most productive feature in the unit. The rolling hills, the small mountain ranges and the foothills hold deer too.

The San Pedro river bottom

Mule deer are present along the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area floodplain in lower numbers, and the guide is candid about the problem: the vegetation is thick enough that getting a clean shot at a buck is difficult. Check the conservation area's own access and firearm rules before you plan on it.

Hiking in for a bigger buck

The agency's advice for a larger buck is extra scouting and hiking into the inaccessible areas. In the Dragoons and Mules that means getting well away from the road system — Mount Glenn and the Dragoon Mountains reach 7,503 feet, Mount Ballard and Escabrosa Ridge 7,358, Fissure Peak and the Mule Mountains 7,351, Black Diamond Peak 7,121 and China Peak 7,095. The saddles between — Mule Pass at 6,050 feet, Middlemarch Pass at 5,941, OK Notch at 6,322 and The Divide at 6,050 — are the ways through.

Maps

The Dragoons are Coronado National Forest, so a Forest Service map sorts out that road system. Topographic maps handle the rest of the unit, which is mostly not forest.

Water

Roughly 687 tanks and 27 springs across 1,440 square miles. In high desert with that ratio, the tanks holding water in a dry autumn will concentrate deer movement.

Unit 30B terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

3,998–5,635 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,516 ft ; peaks can run higher.
1,441.6 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

National Forest — 60%
BLM — 15%
State Trust — 8%
Private / Other — 17%

Roughly 83% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

687 tanks
27 springs
210 stream segments
13 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

How to hunt 30B mule deer: glass the flats and ag edges, and be certain of the species

Rifle success here is about 22 percent. The hunt is straightforward; the identification problem is the thing that gets hunters into trouble.

Identification, because this unit has a record

The guide says it twice, in capitals: mule deer and whitetail are found in the same habitat types in 30B, and more violations for taking the wrong species have occurred here. The things to check are antler structure, body size, and tail size and colour. The regulations' Commission Order 2 lists the distinguishing characteristics — read it before the season. Be patient and be sure.

Hunt the edges

Agricultural fields next to desert habitat hold the highest densities, so the field edges at first and last light are your highest-percentage sits. Get permission where the ground is deeded, glass from a rise or a fence line, and let the deer come out to feed.

Work the flats and the small ranges

The low desert around both ranges is the core habitat. Flat country with no vantage is hard, so use the rolling hills and the small outlying ranges as glassing platforms and work the washes and flats below them. Still-hunting a wash bottom in the first hour of light is a sound alternative when there's nothing to climb.

For a better buck, walk

Extra scouting plus hiking into the inaccessible ground is the agency's own prescription for a larger buck. In the Mules and Dragoons there's a lot of country far from any road, and it's rugged — plan the pack-out before you shoot.

The river bottom

If you hunt the San Pedro floodplain, accept the limitation: thick cover, few clean shots. It's better suited to an archer or a hunter willing to sit a trail than to a glassing-and-stalking plan.

Arizona rules that decide your day

Summarised from AZGFD regulations. They change — read the current regulations and your permit-tag before you hunt.

Legal shooting hours

Big game may be taken only during daylight hours — from sunrise to sunset. Check the sunrise and sunset times for your unit, not for Phoenix.

Motorized retrieval

Arizona permits motorized big-game retrieval only where the unit's travel-management decision allows it, and in several units only for elk. Where it is allowed it means one vehicle, one trip, within one mile of a road shown open on the Motor Vehicle Use Map — never inside a quiet area, a wilderness or a closed area. Pull the MVUM for your ranger district and confirm before you shoot somewhere you cannot carry an animal out of.

Tagging

Sign your tag before you go afield and attach it to the animal immediately after the kill. Hunters aged 10–13 must carry their Hunter Education card with the licence and tag.

Leaving meat

Leaving edible meat in the field is illegal. Edible meat means the four quarters and the loins at a minimum.

Where you may not shoot

Occupied structures — No shooting within a quarter mile of an occupied farmhouse, cabin, lodge or building without the owner's permission. That rules out shooting toward most lakeside cabin tracts.
Campsites and developed areas — Forest Service rules prohibit discharging a firearm within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area.
Roads and water — No shooting from a vehicle, and no shooting on, across or into a road. No shooting across a body of water adjacent to a Forest road.

Mule Deer: where to put the shot

Broadside or quartering away, on the back edge of the front leg about a third of the way up the body.

Shots to refuse

Nothing behind or overlapping the animal you picked.
Your maximum range is the farthest you have shot a three-shot group into a paper plate from the rest you are carrying.
Pass the shot you are talking yourself into.

Plan the carry: roughly 40– 120 lb of boned-out meat, before head and hide — two large coolers. ProHunt planning estimate, not an agency figure.

Mule Deer Success Rates

Rifle22%

Unit 30B runs moderate desert mule deer success for dedicated hunters. With ~525 applicants over 3 years and ~750 tags available (the generous tag side of the ratio includes multiple hunt periods), 30B provides consistent opportunity. Buck quality is typical desert mule deer; the unit isn't a trophy destination but delivers reliable hunts.

30B is one of the more draw-friendly mule deer units in Arizona. The roughly 1.4:1 tag-to-applicant ratio across periods means many hunts draw with 0 or 1 bonus point, and the 20% pass-through pool for 0-point applicants keeps access open. Residents gain a small edge with the hunter-ed bonus point. Pull current-year point breakdowns before applying.

Coues Whitetail Deer Hunting in Unit 30B

Unit 30B encompasses the Peloncillo Mountains along the Arizona-New Mexico border and the southern Chiricahua foothills of southeastern Cochise County. The Peloncillos are a lower, drier sky island range with a mix of oak grassland, desert scrub, and rocky ridgelines running north-south along the state line. Coues whitetail here are genetically linked to populations extending into New Mexico and Sonora, Mexico. This is a less-pressured alternative to the adjacent 30A Chiricahua hunt, with solid deer numbers and more accessible terrain.

Where the Coues deer are in 30B: the Mule Mountains, the Dragoons and the San Pedro

Set expectations honestly. 30B has a relatively small whitetail population compared with the units around it — roughly 125.5 square miles of whitetail habitat at medium to low density, confined to the Dragoon and Mule Mountains and the San Pedro river corridor.

The Mule Mountains

The guide says the Mules offer good deer densities within the unit, which makes them the first choice. Fissure Peak and the Mule Mountains reach 7,351 feet, with Mount Ballard and Escabrosa Ridge at 7,358 and Black Diamond Peak at 7,121. Mule Pass at 6,050 feet is the obvious crossing.

The access problem in the Mules

Read this before you apply: a large portion of the habitat in the Mule Mountains is inaccessible. And the habitat that is accessible, in both the Mules and the Dragoons, can be a long way from any road and extremely rugged. The agency's suggestion is to scout the unit and secure access into the area you want before you apply for a whitetail permit here.

The Dragoon Mountains

Coronado National Forest, so a Forest Service map gives you the road system and the access points. Mount Glenn and the Dragoons top out at 7,503 feet, with Juniper Flats at 6,683 and OK Notch at 6,322 above the canyons — Wildcat Canyon at 5,620 feet, Mary A Canyon at 5,611 and Wood Canyon at 5,596.

The San Pedro corridor

Whitetail are present along the river inside the conservation area, with the same caveat as the mule deer: thick vegetation makes a clean shot hard. Check the area's access and discharge rules before counting on it.

Maps, and what they're for

Forest Service map for the Dragoons; topographic maps for the rest of the unit. On a hunt where the good habitat may be miles from the nearest road, the map's job is to tell you how long the walk is before you commit a day to it.

How to hunt 30B Coues deer: scout the access before you apply, then glass the rough ground

Rifle success for whitetail in 30B is about 18 percent, muzzleloader 14, on a small and scattered population. The agency's advice amounts to doing most of the work before the draw.

Settle access first, as the guide says

Scout the unit and secure access into the area you want before you apply. That's unusual advice to find in a unit guide and it's there because a large part of the Mule Mountains habitat can't be reached, and what can be reached may be miles from a road. Reduce the frustration by knowing which block you'll hunt and how you'll get into it.

Start in the Mules

They hold the better densities in the unit. Identify a legal way in, accept that it's a walk, and get above the cover before light. Mule Pass and the ridges either side of it give you position over several drainages at once.

Glass rugged country patiently

Coues deer in low densities in steep brush are a long-glassing problem. Tripod, 10x or 12x, work the slope in sections, and give a face an hour before moving. Sunlit faces early, shaded and brushier north faces as the day warms and deer bed.

Identification is the unit's recurring problem

Mule deer and whitetail share habitat here and the guide is emphatic that more wrong-species violations have happened in 30B than nearby. Antler structure, body size, tail size and colour — and Commission Order 2 in the regulations spells out the characteristics. Be patient and be certain.

The river as a fallback

If the mountain access doesn't come together, the San Pedro corridor holds whitetail. It's thick, and the agency admits clean shots are hard, but for an archer or a hunter willing to sit a trail in heavy cover it's a legitimate plan. Check the conservation area's own rules first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Unit 30B a realistic draw with few points?

Yes. 30B is among the more accessible Arizona mule deer units. With ~525 applicants for ~750 tags across hunt periods, many hunts draw with 0 or 1 point, and the 20% pass-through for 0-point applicants helps newcomers.

Should I plan for Coues whitetail on the same hunt?

Arizona tags are species-specific, so you can only harvest mule deer on the mule deer tag. That said, 30B holds Coues whitetail as well, and scouting is a great time to learn both species' patterns if you're considering a future Coues application.

Is Unit 30B a good alternative to the Unit 30A Chiricahua draw?

Yes. Unit 30B typically draws with fewer bonus points than 30A, and the Peloncillo Mountains offer solid Coues populations with less hunting pressure. The terrain is less dramatic but deer numbers and buck quality are comparable. For hunters on a point budget, 30B is an excellent choice.

Can I hunt near the New Mexico state line in Unit 30B?

Yes. The eastern boundary of Unit 30B follows the Arizona-New Mexico state line. You can legally hunt right to the state line on the Arizona side. GPS is essential near the border to confirm your location. New Mexico requires a separate license and tag — do not cross the state line while hunting unless you hold valid NM credentials.
