Where to find desert bighorn in the Black Mountains of 15D

Mount Nutt and Warm Springs wilderness canyons

AZGFD's own unit guide calls the rugged canyons of the Mount Nutt and Warm Springs Wilderness Areas excellent sheep country, and we'd start there. It also says desert bighorns live throughout the whole Black Mountains range, so you're not hunting a small pocket. You're hunting a big, steep one. The unit covers 875 square miles, with elevations from 461 to 3,676 feet.

The guide sends you in from the west side, off Silver Creek Road and Oatman Road. Its named targets are Grapevine Canyon, Battleship Mountain and Cottonwood Canyon on the Oatman quad, plus the ridges and canyons about 1.5 miles due west of Warm Springs on the Warm Springs quad. Our terrain data puts Cottonwood Canyon near 2,500 feet and Grapevine Canyon near 1,980. Warm Springs Canyon sits around 1,820.

Secret Pass, Thumb Butte and Ram Spring from the east

The east side comes in from Highway 68 west of Kingman, in Golden Valley. The guide's directions run like this:

  • Take Egar Road south 2.7 miles to Bolsa Road, at the big water tank.
  • Turn right and head west on Bolsa Road to Ganado Road.
  • Go south on Ganado and take the right fork over the cattle guard to reach Secret Pass.
  • Stay on Ganado all the way south through the wilderness entry gate for the Ram Spring area.

Ram and Trough springs, Twin Springs and Thumb Butte (about 2,960 feet) all come off this side. Secret Pass itself tops out near 3,500 feet.

Sitgreaves Pass and Boundary Cone

Sitgreaves Pass, on Highway 66 (the Oatman Highway) right as you crest the ridge, is the easiest glassing stop in the unit. The guide says you'll find sheep north and south of the highway near the pass, and it works as a place to sit and look. The pass is near 3,600 feet. Private property runs along both sides of the highway here, so know where you're standing before you commit to a stalk.

Continue west through Oatman and turn south on Boundary Cone Road (Mohave County Road 53). The guide calls the big peak on your left a key spot for finding herds. Boundary Cone, at roughly 3,374 feet, is the named summit in that area.

What to skip, and what the guide doesn't say

Only about 15 percent of the unit is BLM and 8 percent is State Trust. The mapped ownership shows 77 percent as private or other. Don't assume any given slope is open. Elephants Tooth, Leland Butte and Inscription Rock all show as non-public in our landform data, so don't plan a glassing perch on them.

The guide doesn't split sheep movement into early and late season, and it doesn't rank the areas above. We won't guess at it. Scout several of the named areas instead.

Unit 15D terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 461–3,676 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 1,883 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 875.2 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

  • BLM — 15%
  • State Trust — 8%
  • Private / Other — 77%

Roughly 23% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 158 tanks
  • 59 springs
  • 294 stream segments
  • 32 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Mount Nutt (5,056 ft), Battleship Mountain (4,116 ft), Thimble Mountain (3,969 ft), Black Mesa (3,853 ft)

Holding ground: Coyote Pass (3,737 ft), Sitgreaves Pass (3,595 ft), Secret Pass (3,511 ft), Silver Creek Spring, Warm Springs

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
